Currently Comrades Marathon 2021 is scheduled for Sunday 13 June 2021, the covid contingency date is Sunday 26 September 2021. 

Comrades Marathon 2022 is scheduled for Sunday 12 June 2022.

International Comrades Marathon runners still registered for Comrades 2020, have the choice of deferring their entry to Comrades 2021 or Comrades 2022 due to Covid-19 cancellation of Comrades 2020. South African Comrades runners will have to re-enter for Comrades 2021, as entries are not being deferred.

 Courageous runners travel from all over the world (approximately 80 countries) to partake in the famed Comrades Marathon, rated as one of the Top 10 Ultra’s in the world and arguably known as the best. Comrades Marathon is the world’s largest and oldest ultra-marathon race with a distance of +/- 90 km / 56 miles. Run annually since 1921 (except during World War 2 & Covid-19) between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.  Comrades 2021 will be the 100th anniversary since the start of Comrades Marathon.

Join the 95th Comrades Marathon, 100 Year Anniversary 1921-2021 – The Ultimate Human Race, “Down run” in the “Zulu Kingdom” KwaZulu-Natal. Founded by Vic Clapham a World War 1 Veteran, to commemorate South Africa soldiers killed during the war, Comrades Marathon has been run annually since 1921 (except during World War 2, 1941-1945 & Covid-19 in 2020) between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The direction of the race changes every year as it alternates between the ‘Up Run’ and ‘Down Run’ (except for the millennium year 2000 which was a double down run). In 2021 the race will  a down run due to the 100th anniversary celebration. Comrades 2026 will be the 100th Race celebration, subject to no further unexpected cancellation of the annual Comrades Marathon.

Completing the Comrades Marathon is a life changing achievement for every runner, novice or experienced. The atmosphere is sensational and the crowds supporting this major event are unique with in depth knowledge of what it takes to run the Comrades. The spirit of the Comrades Marathon is known to embody the attributes of camaraderie, selflessness, dedication, courage, perseverance, and ‘Ubuntu’ which is a term that roughly translates as humanity towards others. RACE INFO

Date: Sunday 13 June 2021.

The Comrades Marathon is run under the rules and regulations of ASA, KZNA, IAAF and Comrades Marathon Association. Foreign athletes must strictly observe IAAF Rule 4.

All foreign athletes expecting to WIN PRIZE MONEY must note that to participate in the event, they require written approval (a permit) from their National Federations. In a case where a foreign athlete is entered through a South African athletics club, it is the responsibility of the club to assist the athlete in securing the permit, and to hand it over to the race organizers before the event takes place. Event organizers reserve the right to reject the entry of foreign athletes who violates IAAF Rule 4.

No personal mobile seconding is allowed in the Comrades or the athlete will be disqualified.

GRADE / ROUTE

The 2021 Comrades Marathon route is a “Down Run” from Pietermaritzburg to Durban an estimated 90 Km.

The race is known for The Big Five Hills: Cowies Hill, Fields Hill, Bothas Hill, Inchanga and Polly Shorts.

The Comrades Marathon is an enormous challenge. It is important to prepare physically for the challenge, and equally important to prepare mentally for the challenge of running 90 odd kilometers.

RACE PRE-ENTRY OPEN & CLOSE DATES

Race Registration: It is compulsory for all athletes to register online at www.comrades.com. Entries for 2021 open around October 2020.

Substitutions: The Comrades Marathon Association will accept substitutions for the 2021 Comrades Marathon during the window period mid March  and ending mid April 2020. No late substitutions will be accepted.

Runner participation is capped at around 27,500 runners

AGE RESTRICTION:

The Comrades Marathon is open to qualified runners 20 years and older on the day of Comrades (ASA Rule 20).

QUALIFYING TIMES

It is mandatory to complete a qualifying marathon within 04:50 hours or qualify on one of the longer Road Ultra’s per specified criteria on Comrades website.

SEEDING

All runners are seeded in accordance with their qualification times, green numbers, charity, elite.

QUALIFYING RACES

A qualifying race must be completed between 24 August 2020 and by 04 May 2021 and the details submitted / updated to the your Comrades entry profile. Novices must pre-Qualify to enter. All qualifying races must be ASA or IAAF technically compliant and meet the Comrades Marathon qualifying criteria and you must submit your approved club name, license number and qualifying race details by no later than 2nd of May tbc. This can be done online at www.comrades.com.

No seeding upgrades will be accepted thereafter and particularly at Race Registration.  If you do not comply with the deadline, you will not be able to participate and your details will be removed from Comrades Marathon database, which means that you will NOT receive a goodie bag or runner’s t-shirt.

RACE START & FINISH

The Comrades “Down Run” STARTS it Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05h30 on Sunday 13 June 2021 and FINISHES at the majestic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban at 17h30, 12 hours later. The race is run from “gun to gun” and can be a brutal race if you do not make the final gun.

CUT-OFF TIMES

Time Limits and cut-offs: During the race an athlete must also reach five cut-off points in specified times to complete the race. The cut-off times for these points will be reconfirmed in the final race instructions. The CMA reserves the right to alter these positions and times. Runners will be required to board a rescue bus and be transported to the finish venue should they not have reached the cut-off points within the specified time. Runners must also finish within 12 hours and before the finish gun goes off in order to complete the Comrades Marathon.

RACE EXPO / RACE PACK COLLECTION ADDRESS

The Durban Expo can be really entertaining with much browsing and photo opportunities to do among the many exhibitors, though you are reminded not to spend excess time on your feet. You will need proof of ID, Passport or Drivers license, final race confirmation and your personal ChampionChip in order to collect your Race Pack.

RACE TIMING / CHIP

ChampionChip: You need to own your own personal non-transferable ChampionChip for this race. If you do not have one you can purchase it online with your race registration at www.comrades.com

The ChampionChip is issued to you at the Comrades Expo registration in June 2021 prior to the race. If you already own a ChampionChip you MUST bring and present your chip to the Comrades Expo when you collect race number. You will be disqualified if you run with someone else’s ChampionChip.

RACE PACK:

Consists of a goodie bag, souvenir magazine and your Limited Edition Comrades T-Shirt.

REFRESHMENT STATIONS

Comrades Marathon is very well equipped with many refreshment stations at approximately every 2 km’s.

MEDICAL / FIRST AID STATIONS

Well catered for along the race and a huge contingent of medical support at the finish medical tent.

FINISHER MEDALS

All runners completing Comrades within the 12:00 cut off will receive the following Comrades Medals

Gold Medals are awarded to the first 10 men and first 10 woman to cross the finish

The Wally Haywood Medal for men, position 11 to sub 6:00 hours

Isavel Roche-Kelly for woman, position 11 sub 07:30 hours

Silver Medal, 06:00 to sub 07:30 hours

Bill Rowan, 07:30 to sub 09:00 hours

Robert Mtshali Medal, 09:00 to sub 10:00 hours

In addition to the above medals, Back to Back Medals are given to Novices that complete the “UP” and “Down Run” within two consecutive “novice” years.

PERSONAL KIT & WEATHER

June is winter in South Africa, the weather in KwaZulu-Natal is pleasant and can vary from 18-25 degrees. Early mornings and evenings can be a little chilly. Many Comrades runners wear tops at the start, gloves and buffs that they discard along the route to the grateful supporters and less privileged.

Make sure to pack all your usual runners gels and potions to sustain you for this epic race as well as your ChampionChip if you own one already, if not make sure you collect it at the Expo, as ordered upon race registration.
