The Deloitte Challenge KwaZulu-Natal offers you a bucket list of choices featuring a 42.2 Km Marathon a 21.1 Km Half Marathon; a 10 Km Run, a 5 Km Fun Run and a 40 Km Road Cycle Race. Providing options for everyone to partake in this Challenge. The Deloitte Marathon is immensely popular due to the very scenic coastal route from Ballito along the M4 to Durban. The specific events have different starting venues and times, please refer to Event Info for full details.

Ballito, Dolphin Coast in KwaZulu-Natal is a top holiday destination for all South Africans and a growing International tourist destination, with easy access via King Shaka International Airport, a mere 20 minutes drive.


This area is aptly known as the Dolphin Coast, due to frequent sightings of frolicking bottle-nose dolphins who ride the waves. The Dolphin Coast is an adventurers dream with endless activities and multiple world class restaurants. In Ballito town you will be spoilt with an incredible option of varied “Lifestyle Eat Street” dining options, a firm favorite for locals and a new shopping center with over 200 shops and many sports shops.

The Dolphin Coast beaches are very popular for swimming with the option of safe rock pools and beach areas managed by life guards due to currents.  The beachfront also offers you a variety of great restaurants overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Day 1. Friday 15 March 2019 – ARRIVAL

Arrive at Fairmont Zimbali  hotel where you will stay for 2 nights.. Official Hotel check-in time is 14h00. During the day and evening you can explore the many attractions and wide variety of restaurants at Zimbali and Ballito.

Day 2. Saturday 16 March 2019 – RACE REGISTRATION

Breakfast at your hotel is included. Today you are at leisure to enjoy this beautiful resort, we will also have a number of optional activities lined up for your stay in Ballito. Your race packs can be collected on your behalf and delivered to you at the hotel.

It’s time to prepare your final race kit, enjoy your pre-race dinner and get plenty of rest!

Day 3. Sunday 17 March 2019 – RACE DAY

Early Morning Race breakfast and proceed to race start own transport (or on request). If you are checking out today your luggage will be stored prior to departure from the hotel and you will need to settle your individual accounts.

11h00 Official hotel check-out time and settle your extra’s account with the hotel.

The races will finish at Durban beachfront and you will need to make arrangements to be transferred from Durban back to Ballito, so you can refresh before departure.

Wish to stay longer, just let us know so we can make arrangements for you.


Transfers and transport have not been included for Cyclists as you will need to advise us if you have any special requirements for bicycle transport.

The Deloitte Challenge events are held under the rules of International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), Athletics South Africa (ASA), KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) and Cycling SA. All foreign athletes must comply with IAAF Rule 4.2 and Rule 142.

The Deloitte Marathon is a Comrades Marathon qualifier, the route is fast and ideal for a personal best, PB! Entries are capped at 7250 across the Marathon, Half Marathon and Cycle Race. Tog bag facilities are provided at the race starts (except 5 Km) and will be delivered to the race finish venue.

Marathon runners must hold a permanent ASA licence and wear club kit. Temporary licences for the 10 Km and 21 Km races can be ordered with your entry and collected at registration, running clothes must be club kit or personal kit with no advertising.

Cyclists that are not licensed by Cycling SA will need to purchase a day licence at a cost of R45.


Marathon: The Deloitte Challenge Marathon starts at Lifestyle Centre, Ballito, looping around the centre before turning right at Ashton College onto the M4 Northern freeway running south on the northbound carriage way. The route then dips gently from Ballito to the beautiful Umdloti lagoon and continues up the hill from the bridge over the Umdloti River. A gentle climb up to Umhlanga is followed by a very fast run into the city where the beachfront skyline and the iconic Moses Mabhida stadium forms the backdrop to the finish. The route turns off the M4 at The Durban Country Club and then follows the Durban Promenade to the finish at the Amphitheatre.

Half Marathon: The Deloitte Challenge Half Marathon starts in the parking lot of Sibaya Casino and then goes down the hill onto the M4 Northern freeway running south on the northbound carriage way. There is a very fast section down to the Umhlanga lagoon. A gentle climb up to Umhlanga from the lagoon is followed by a very fast run into the city where the beachfront skyline and the iconic Moses Mabhida stadium forms the backdrop to the finish. The route turns off the M4 at The Durban Country Club and then follows the Durban Promenade to the finish at the Amphitheatre.

10 Km  Race: The Ten-K starts at Virginia Soccer Club, Virginia Airport Circle and feeds onto the M4. The road glides onto the M4 and is followed by a very fast run into the city where the beachfront skyline and the iconic Moses Mabhida stadium forms the backdrop to the finish. The route turns off the M4 at The Durban Country Club and then follows the Durban Promenade to the finish at the Amphitheatre.

5 Km Fun Run; The Fun Run starts and finishes at Amphitheatre, Durban Promenade. The route follows the Durban beachfront promenade out and back to the finish.
Cycle Race 40 Km: The Deloitte Challenge Cycle Race starts at Lifestyle Centre, goes through Ballito and onto the M4. The Cycle Race follows the Marathon route to Durban and finishes on the M4 at Sandile Thusi Road.


Entries open as at January 2019 and entries close at 17h00 on Wednesday 06 March 2019 or will close earlier when the combined entry to these races reaches 7250. There are no late entries and no substitutions are permitted.


(This is not applicable to persons staying In Zimbali / Ballito area, as transfers to race start are provided by Sports Adventure tours)

As this is a point to point challenge finishing in Durban, runners may purchase a coach transfer ticket on race pre entry. Tickets cost R70 and will also be sold at race registration. Runners without a coach transfer ticket will no be able to board the coach.Transport will only be provided to the start venues of the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10 Km Challenges, no transport will be provided for the return from Durban to Ballito and runners should make their own arrangements. There will be no transport for Cyclists and Bicycles.

All running challenges end at the Amphitheatre Durban Promenade and the Cycle Challenge ends on the M4 near Sandile Thusi Road with full road closure of the M4 coastal highway.


Marathon 42 Km: 09h00 @ 21.1 Km, runners will be asked to leave the road by authorised officials and will be transported to the finish. A Comrades qualifier needs to be run in a sub 4h50.

Cyclists: 06h45 @ ca 20 Km  M4 Sibaya Circle / 07h15 Virginia Airport circle by 07h15 / or not completed the Cycle Race in 2h30 will be requested to leave the road by authorised officials and be transported with their bicycles to the finish. Under no circumstances can cyclists continue to cycle on the M4 or return to the start on the M4.

Cut-off time for all events is Midday 12h00.


Race numbers and packs (no packs for the 5 Km Fun Run) can be collected at the Amphitheatre, Durban Promenade. You will require your email/SMS prroof of entry from the Deloitte Challenge Team, your race number and your ID.

All races except the 5 Km race require you to wear a ChampionChip timing device. If you already own your personal device you must wear it. Alternatively you can purchase a personal ChampionChip on race registration for R150 or hire a temporary ChampionChip for this challenge only for R50. Runners require a ChampionChip for timing and to qualify for prizes.


The race pack includes a stylish moisture management race shirt or vest (not applicable for 10 & 5 Km runners). Sizes are pre selected at race entry and collected at race registration. Deloitte reserves the right to substitute sizes selected.



Refreshments stations are provided along the route and a choice of refreshments, food and entertainment will be available at the finish in Durban.
